Verification levels

What each level unlocks, and how to reach it.

Updated: 2026-08-22

Mishkan has four verification levels. They are not badges: each one opens a specific set of rights, and the app refuses anything above your level.

The idea is simple. Reading and writing to people you already know asks for nothing. Speaking to the whole community asks for more, because a voice that reaches everyone should cost something real.

The four levels

Levels are cumulative: each one keeps everything the previous ones gave you.

Account created

Sign up with an email address and a password. Nothing to verify yet.

  • A profile and a PIN. Someone opens a conversation with you using your PIN; you open theirs with theirs.
  • Private messaging: text, photos, videos, voice and links.
  • Sending and receiving Mem.
  • Joining groups and channels, reading their feed, and publishing there if the group allows it.
  • Browsing the directory of Jewish businesses and institutions.

Your Mem counter is not running yet — your balance only moves through what you receive.

Email

A six-digit code sent to your address. Signing up with Apple or Google grants level 1 immediately: the provider has already verified the address.

  • Reading the public feed — both the visual feed and the text feed.
  • Opening a post and its page.
  • Reporting a post.

Phone (SMS)

A six-digit code sent by SMS to the number you give.

  • Activates your Mem counter: 1 Mem a day until the next shmita.
  • Writing to the author of a post directly, without going through their PIN.
  • Contributing to the directory: reporting a correction, recommending a place, adding a photo (3 per member).

Mezuzah

A photo of your mezuzah, reviewed by hand by our team. The photo stays private and is only ever seen by the team.

  • Publishing to the public feed — text, visual post or YouTube video. Each post costs 2 Mem, paid to the Mishkan account.
  • Proposing a new record for the directory (5 pending at a time).

Reviewed by a person, so allow some time.

Formal verification

Requested from the app; identity checked by hand by our team.

  • Business accounts: up to 26 secondary identities to post and write under. Mem always stays on the owner's account.
  • Creating API keys and using the public API on your own behalf.
  • Claiming a directory record and keeping it up to date.

Good to know

  • A level is never taken back. Once reached, it stays.
  • Levels 3 and 4 are decided by a person, not by an algorithm. A refusal comes with a reason and can be applied for again.
  • Blocking works the same at every level and is symmetrical: neither of you sees the other any more.
  • Publishing inside a group has no level gate. The audience there is the members, who consented by joining; the group sets its own rules and its own price.
  • The API never grants more than your level does. A key opens the same doors as the account that minted it, and no others.
